Future Clusters

Abstract: The first supercomputing cluster was developed 25 years ago at Caltech: 64 Intel nodes. It was a breakthrough in many respects, of which low price was perhaps the most dramatic. Today, the largest clusters have ~100,000 cores, but developers run out of electricity and algorithm scalability long before they run out of money. Future cluster facilities may resemble steel mills in scope, with some surprising new issues and even more surprising solutions to those issues.
